In the decades that followed, Vandross continued to find ways to push the art forward instead of relying on the tried and true. Luther Vandross’ voice was the soundtrack of many Black millennial childhoods. Along with the irresistibly joyful title track of Vandross’ 1981 solo debut, Never Too Much, “A House Is Not a Home” also helped launch him after many years of working behind the scenes as a session vocalist and arranger for acts like David Bowie and Bette Midler and as the singer of “Searching” and “The Glow of Love,” two classy hits for the Italian/American disco group Change. Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Celine Dion have all acknowledged the impact that their sometime duet partner had on them. It is a true reflection of Luther Vandross’s musical legacy around the world to be honored by Google with an animated video Doodle that fittingly captures the joy Luther has brought the world,' they said in a statement. ![]() In the process, he transcends the ‘60s divas who inspired him-Dionne Warwick, Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin-to create a model for those who followed. ![]() That’s just what he did on his astonishing 1981 cover of “A House Is Not a Home,” transforming the Burt Bacharach/Hal David classic into an acutely personal demonstration of his control, dexterity, and expressiveness. In that span he released eight 1 R&B albums, seven 1 R&B. The album, a collection of cover versions, produced the singles 'Endless Love', 'Always and Forever', and 'Aint No Stoppin Us Now'. It was released by Epic Records on September 20, 1994. A suave yet warmhearted New Yorker who became one of R&B’s beloved balladeers from his solo breakthrough in the early ‘80s to his untimely death in 2005, Vandross was also a vocalist whose understanding of singing as an art form was so profound, he changed notions of what it could be. For almost 25 years, from 1981 to 2005, Luther Vandross dominated the American R&B music charts like no other artist before or since. Songs is the ninth studio album by American R&B/soul singer-songwriter Luther Vandross. Luther Vandross was more than just a great singer. ![]() ![]() Use our professional movers and save 40-60% over full-service moving companies. He’s different than in the movie - we made him more childish, more older brother than parental figure. And he’s never half-measured in emotion: he gets insanely upset and joyous. THR’s critic agrees, as Brightman’s performance “genuflects to Jack Black in the movie while putting his own anarchic stamp on the role of Dewey Finn” and inclusively shares the spotlight with the production’s cast of children who play their own instruments onstage. You can eventually take over the entirety of Stilwater, but Saints Row 2 is less concerned with creating a living, breathing world than it is with providing you with a giant sandbox to go nuts in, and the character creation is pretty indicative of this mindset. These investments pay back dividends on a daily basis, and it doesn't take long for them to start racking up, to the point that money isn't much of a concern at all. You'll gain turf as you take out your enemies, and you can also buy an interest in any shops in your territory. You'll earn some scratch running these missions, though real estate is the best way to build your fortune. ![]() In a different context, a good amount of the stuff you can do in Saints Row 2 would seem fundamentally abhorrent, but the florid visuals and campy tone neutralize any potential for seriousness. Not all of these side activities are winners, but there's enough variety that you're never stuck grinding on an activity you don't much care for. Take that, mass transit! There are are also some ridiculous diversions, such as streaking, basejumping, anonymous bathroom sex, and car surfing. These can include performing insurance fraud by taking a dive in front of a moving car, lowering property values by spraying sewage, running drugs, protecting prostitutes, impersonating an officer, and riding a flaming ATV through the city streets, setting off explosions. To take on these primary missions, you've got to have a certain respect level, which you can build up quickly by taking on the occasional side mission. The main missions concern you with taking out rival gangs, and while this can be as simple as wasting a building full of dudes, sometimes you'll have to blow up the building itself, or at least fly a helicopter into it. While GTA IV strove for dramatic weight and verisimilitude, Saints Row 2 instead tries to pack in as many ridiculous activities as possible. This was most noticeable for me with Michael Dorn as the insane biker Maero, though I won't deny getting a kick out of going up against a dude who sounds like Worf. ![]() There's a fair amount of celebrity stunt-casting in Saints Row 2, which can make it difficult to separate the character from the actor. Aside from the appearance of a few returning characters, Saints Row 2 doesn't really bother to resolve anything from the first game, which makes its overly familiar references to past characters and events that much more confusing. The rest of the game focuses on you getting the Saints back together, taking down the other gangs of Stilwater, and eventually, Ultor itself. You wake up from your coma with a new face and with the city of Stilwater being overtaken by the oppressive Ultor Corporation, which has turned the gritty Saints Row area into a quasi-futuristic glass-and-steel paragon of corporate greed. The game picks up several years after the end of Saints Row, where your character was apparently blown up in a boat explosion. As much as it is a sequel to Saints Row, this is the logical extension of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, more so than GTA IV, and not just because of the similar street-gang premise. One of many blinged-out looks you can give the Saints. The original Saints Row didn't always benefit from comparisons to the Grand Theft Auto series, though with Saints Row 2, it's apparent that the two franchises are going in two very different directions. ![]() ![]() Looking for the ideal name for your WoW Dwarf character Look no further Our name generator is the ultimate source of inspiration. ![]() ![]() But too large of a scale can also result in a massive, unwieldy model with a prohibitively high piece count and cost. The bigger the scale, the more accurately you can represent all the elements of the original building in your LEGO model. There is obviously a trade-off associated with scale. And so if the actual building is 100 feet wide, your model would have to be 1 foot wide or it would not have the right proportions (it would either look too skinny or too squat compared to the real building). Now, this 1/100 ratio applies to all the dimensions in the model – not just the height. ![]() So a 1/100 scale simply means that your model of a 500 foot tall building would stand exactly 5 feet tall. The scale is just the relative size of your model compared to the actual building – expressed as a ratio. The first step is picking the scale that works best for the model. I am sure some people can pull it off but this approach is clearly a hit-or-miss for many others (which is the only way I can explain all the models I have seen that are badly out of proportion compared to the real building).īeing an engineer, I tend to rely on a more rigorous approach based on math (very simple math as it turns out) instead of using just my eyes and intuition. What exactly is involved in designing a LEGO model of a real skyscraper ? I wish I had a knack for doing it by eye – intuitively figuring out how wide (in terms of studs) and tall (in terms of brick heights) the model needs to be just by looking at pictures of the real building.
